잘못 선택한 썸머캠프가 대학입시를 망칠 수 있다

해마다 여름방학 전에 학부모님과 학생들로부터 어느 캠프를 가야 할지, 과연 섬머캠프를 참여하는 것이 입시에 도움이 될지 문의가 많다. 결론은 ‘대학의 캠프나 프로그램의 참여 자체가 아니라 많은 비용과 시간을 들여 참여하는 목적과 그 이후 학생의 발전적인 태도, 커뮤니티 기여도가 중요하다’는 것이다.
Q : 명문 대학에서 제공하는 여름방학 프로그램에 참여하는 것이 대학입시에서 중요한 영향을 끼치는가?
A : 아니다. 이는 학부모와 학생들이 갖는 오해이며, 명문대 합격 확률을 높일 수 있다고 잘못 생각하고 있다. 또한 학생의 높은 지적 호기심과 학문에 대한 열정 그리고 다른 학생들과의 차별화를 보여주는 것이라고 오해한다.
그렇다면 지적 호기심과 학문에 대한 열정이 명문 대학 입학사정관이 요구하는 것일까? 물론이다. 명문 대학의 입학사정관들이 원하는 학생상은 지적 호기심과 배움을 갈구하는 학생이다. 하지만 높은 비용을 요구하는 미국 대학 여름방학 프로그램 참가가 과연 내가 원하는 대학의 입학으로 연결될 것인지는 생각해봐야 할 문제이다. 높은 비용을 지불하고 가는 해외봉사 프로그램이나 논문 작성 지도를 받는 리서치 페이퍼 프로그램 참여도 마찬가지다. 대학 원서의 이러한 내용들은 학생이 부모로부터 얼마나 많은 재정적 혜택을 받고 있는지 입학사정관에게 고스란히 보이고, 원서와 에세이 작성에서 전문적 대필에 관한 의심만 유발시킨다. 거의 모든 한국 유학생들이 미국의 비싼 보딩스쿨을 거쳐 사립대학에 지원하는 것과 연관되고, 원서에서 비쳐지는 이러한 내용들은 결국 비용을 지불할 능력이 있음을 입학사정관에게 과시하는 것에 불과하다. 그리고 직시하여야 할 점은 대부분의 입학사정관들은 중산층 혹은 그보다 못한 환경에서 왔고, 그들의 연봉 또한 높지 않은 중산층의 연봉이라는 사실이다. 호사스러운 해외 활동들은 학생들의 입학 결과에 오히려 부정적인 시선으로 처리된다. 그런 이유들 때문에 미국을 비롯한 해외에서는 사치스럽고 학생의 본분에서 벗어난 사진과 댓글들을 배제시키는 페이스북 컨설팅이 판을 치고 있는 것이다.

종합적으로 자기계발 노력과 높은 레벨의 수업 수강은 학생의 배움과 자아발전에 대한 열정을 입증할 수 있다. 그러나 여름캠프 혹은 심화학습 프로그램에 참여했다는 사실 자체가 원서의 부가가치가 되지는 않는다. 중요한 점은 이러한 과정을 통하여 그 경험으로부터 무엇을 얻었는지, 그리고 그 경험이 학생의 지적 활동과 역량을 어떻게 향상시킬 수 있었는지다.
위 맥락에서 우리는 두 가지 힌트를 얻을 수 있다. 첫 번째, 여름방학 프로그램에 참여하는 것이 어떠한 부분에서 배움을 추구하는 나의 지적인 삶을 향상시키는지 의문을 제시해야 한다. 두 번째, 이러한 경험으로부터 무엇을 얻었는지, 또한 무엇을 배웠고 그 배움으로부터 무엇을 이루었는지다. 만약 이번 여름방학 동안에 어떠한 프로그램에 참여하려고 한다면 반드시 위 두 가지 질문에 대답을 할 수 있어야 한다. 목적 없는 배움과 배움 뒤에 행함이 없이 오직 활동 부분에 칸 하나 더 채울 목적인 여름캠프는 분명 입학의 기회를 해치게 될 것이다. 아직 여름방학 계획이 확정되어 있지 않은 학생들에게 하고 싶은 조언은 캠프를 참가하든 봉사활동이나 인턴쉽을 하든 무엇을 하기에 앞서 두 가지 질문에 대한 대답을 얻기 위한 본인만의 계획과 차별성을 충분히 생각해보고 행해야 한다는 것이다.
좋은 예를 하나 든다면 자녀가 영화에 관심이 있고 영화와 미디어 교육을 전공하기 원한다면, 여름방학에 일류대학에서 영화 제작 과정에 참여하는 것이 그럴듯해 보일 것이다. 이러한 단순한 접근법 대신 예일대학과 같은 미국 명문 대학에서 어떻게 영화, 미디어 교육을 제공하는지 살펴보면 그 해답을 얻을 수 있다. 그들은 영화를 제작하는 테크닉을 가르치는 것이 아니라 방대한 학문적 수준에서 수업을 진행한다. 여름방학 프로그램에서 영화 기술을 배우는 것 대신 전문작가들의 각본를 읽으며, 그들의 문체를 학습하여 나만의 극본을 훌륭한 문체로 표현할 수 있는 시간을 보냈다면 여름방학이 끝나고 학교로 돌아가서 비디오를 찍을 수 있는 친구를 찾고, 카메라맨이 아닌 대본작가, 디렉터, 프로듀서로서 나만의 독립영화를 주변을 독려하여 만드는 것이다. 아이비리그를 비롯한 명문 대학들은 내면의 동기로부터 시작하여 동료와 커뮤니티에 좋은 영향력을 끼치며, 그 커뮤니티를 발전시킬 수 있는 고유한 독창성과 리더쉽을 발휘하는 학생을 원한다.

Summer enrichment programs at highly selective colleges are a great way to stand out in the highly selective college admissions process. Wrong! It’s a common misconception that too many parents and high school students buy into year after year, erroneously thinking that attending such a programs will improve one’s odds of gaining admission to a top college. The usual argument supporting such beliefs is that attending such a program will demonstrate 1.) great intellectual curiosity, 2.) a love of learning, or 3.) that the student can hold his or her own against other talented high school students.
Are intellectual curiosity and a genuine love of learning important to demonstrate to admissions officers at highly selective colleges? Definitely. Students who demonstrate a love of learning and a deep intellectual curiosity are the kinds of students admissions officers look to admit. But cost-bearing college summer programs don’t say to admissions officers what so many parents and students think they say. The same holds true for attending programs that require you to pay to volunteer abroad, and also research programs where students are coached into writing research papers. Displaying such content in the application shows admission officers that a student can only function under the financial support of his parents, which then raises doubt as to how much of what the student claims on the application is truly him versus parental pushing or professional coaching. Coupling this with the fact that almost all Korean international students applying to US universities attend expensive private or boarding schools, writing down these programs in an application end up doing nothing more than fancifully showing off to admission officers who have medium incomes that one can afford the costs, and the student’s admission chances are ruined.
Let’s read a quote from Stanford admission’s FAQ page:
Overall, engaging in enrichment opportunities and advanced courses may demonstrate your enthusiasm for learning and discovery. The fact that you are taking summer or enrichment programs is not in and of itself the value-add to your application; it is what you take from that experience, and how that experience has enhanced your intellectual life that is of importance.
In this context, note two key hints. First, one must sincerely question whether attending a summer program will enhance his intellectual life in a way that a different choice could not have granted. Second, what did you take away from this experience, or simply, what did you do with what you learned over the summer? If you are attending a summer program this summer, make sure you have these two questions answered or the summer program will end up hurting your admission chances. As for the rest of the summer, and for everyone else who aren’t attending summer programs, still figure out what experiences you will need to gain to obtain the answers to the two questions.
Let’s look at an example. Say your child wants to express an interest in film, so attending a filmmaking course at a prestigious university would look great right? Instead of this simple minded approach, consider how while some prestigious American universities such as Yale do offer film and media studies, they do so from an overwhelmingly academic context. So instead of learning filming techniques at a summer program, consider spending the summer reading scripts by professional writers to learn to write your own. Then return to school at the end of the summer, find a peer who can shoot video, and produce your own independent film as the script writer, director, and producer rather than a cameraman. Ivy League and its peers want students who excel because of internal motivation that shapes out into ingenuity and accomplishments that influences their peers and their communities.
