미국 명문대 입학 에세이를 공략하라

여름이 다가오면서 원서를 쓸 12학년 학생들은 좋은 에세이를 쓰기 위해 걱정이 크다. 이맘때 상담 오는 학부형들과 학생들은 어떻게 에세이에서 자신만의 강점을 보여주고, 어떤 내용의 에세이를 통해 지원하고 싶은 대학에 본인의 매력을 어필할지 많은 고민과 궁리들을 하게 된다.
미국 대학의 입시는 해가 지나면서 메인 에세이뿐 아니라, 학생의 학습적 흥미와 전공을 어떻게 발전시키고 관심을 보여주었는지를 입증해줄 수 있는 서플리먼트 에세이에도 중요한 초점을 맞추고 있다. 하지만 여전히 많은 대학에서는 대학원서의 가장 중요한 요소로 메인 에세이를 꼽고 있다. 멋진 에세이 하나로 대학에 합격할 수는 없지만 아무리 훌륭한 학생이라도 잘못된 메인 에세이를 쓴다면 불합격 처리가 되고, 약간 부족하더라도 입학사정관을 설득시킬 수 있는 훌륭한 에세이를 썼다면 합격에 도움이 될 수 있다. 그렇다면 좋은 에세이란 무엇인가? 다음에 나와 있는 메인 에세이를 쓰는 방법을 참고하도록 하자.
1. 나열하지 말라.
미국 명문대학에 지원하는 많은 학생들이 자신이 얼마나 훌륭한 학생인지 대학에 입증하기 위해 메인 에세이에 본인의 업적과 활동 리스트를 나열하려고 한다. 대학 원서에는 9학년 이후에 한 모든 활동과 업적, 수상 경력, SAT/ ACT 점수까지 각각 기록할 수 있도록 분리가 되어 있다. 또한 각 대학 서플리먼트 에세이에서는 대학에서 하고 싶은 전공과 미래의 목표를 위해 어떠한 관심 분야를 살려 무슨 경험을 하였는지를 자세히 묻고 있다. 메인 에세이에서 본인이 한 활동 리스트를 나열한다면 이는 지루하고 이미 원서에 작성한 내용과 중복이 되어 나의 매력을 대학에 어필할 수 있는 좋은 기회를 놓치게 되는 것이다. 가장 매력 있는 에세이는 발전하는 과정을 적은 성장 스토리가 담긴 내용이다. 나의 주장을 뒷받침할 수 있는 세부 내용은 사고의 깊이, 나의 인격과 성향, 지적인 수준, 고등학교 4년 동안의 성장과 발전 과정을 나타내기 위해 나만의 스토리 진행과 관련이 있어야 한다.
2. 적절한 유머
학생들은 재미있는 요소들이 입학사정관에게 즐거움을 줄 것이라고 생각하여 최대의 유머를 에세이에 넣으려고 한다. 그러나 아주 우스운 내용, 유치한 내용을 포함한 주류 코미디와 재치 있고 지적인 유머의 차별을 이해하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 에세이에서 보이는 재치란 보통 일반상식 안에서의 재미가 아니라 적절한 비유를 사용하여 품격 있는 자기 비하를 통하여 의미 있는 재미와 질문을 던지는 것이다. 코미디가 아닌 적절한 위트를 사용하여 진지한 질문에 대한 답변에 포커스를 맞추고 높은 수준의 에세이를 통하여 입학사정관의 입에 미소를 가져다주는 것은 농담에만 초점을 맞춘 어리석은 에세이와는 비교할 수 없다.
3. 목소리 =(독창성+톤)X(자신감+겸손)
메인 에세이에서 또 다른 복잡한 과제는 목소리이다. 자신감과 겸손을 잘 혼합하면서 이해하기 쉬운 톤으로 나만의 독특함을 나타낼 수 있어야 한다. 독창성을 나타내되 글을 통해 느껴지는 말투에 호감이 가고 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 사람이라는 인식을 줘야 한다. 자신감은 자존감 형성에 굉장히 중요한 요소이다. 하지만 진정한 자존감은 외부로부터 오는 영향을 받아들일 수 있는 융통성, 그리고 성취감은 주변의 필요를 채워야 할 의무감을 품을 수 있는 넓은 마음, 즉 상대방의 필요를 충족시켜줌으로써 높은 책임감을 아는 관용과 배움의 융통성을 보이는 겸손으로 보인다는 것을 기억해야 한다. 잘못된 자랑으로 인해 자신감이 교만으로 왜곡될 수 있는 점을 잊지 말고, 진정한 자아성취를 위해 끊임없이 배우고 도전하는 모습을 보여주어라.
4. 캐릭터(성격)
대학은 학생들을 “캐릭터와 개인적인 자질”로 등급을 매긴다. 왜냐하면 지원자의 인격은 종합 입학 절차의 핵심적인 부분이기 때문이다. 실제로 원서에서 캐릭터는 1)특별 교외 활동 2)에세이 3)추천서 4)인터뷰 이 네 가지 부분으로 측정된다. 12학년 학생들은 메인 에세이를 쓸 때 반드시 기억해야 할 점은 본인이 에세이에서 내세우는 면, 특별히 인성적인 면에서 본인만의 주장이 아닌 위에서 언급한 네 가지 요소에서 일관성 있게 연결되는 증거를 갖추어서 주변으로부터 뒷받침될 수 있어야한다.
저학년들은 12학년이 되기 전에 네 가지 파트에서 보완해야 할 만한 부분을 찾아서 반드시 자신만의 독특하고 훌륭한 성품을 미리 앞서 발전시켜서 본인이 원서에서 주장하는 부분과 외부에서 주장이 뒷받침되는 증거자료를 갖추어놓자

As America’s college admissions process becomes more holistic with each passing year, colleges are focusing on not only the main application essay but also the supplementary essays in relations to how the evidence supporting the argument developed in the latter bespeaks of the student’s academic interest and major. However, main application essays are still definitely considered by almost all American colleges as very important factors in admissions. Therefore, a poorly written main essay can cause a great student to become rejected while an exceptional essay can help a student with marginal scores to become accepted. The below provides a guideline of key points to remember as the main essay is being written.
Don’t List
Many students, in an attempt to wow colleges, attempt to include a list of accomplishments and activities in their main essay. As the application provides a separate area for one to list Activities, accomplishments and awards, grades, and SAT/ACT scores, as well as college-specific supplementary essays that ask for how experiences shaped future goals and interest in academic majors, a list-focused main essay creates boredom and redundancy in the application.
Instead, the most engaging essays unfold a story with a clear focus on development. Details used to support your thoughts must all be relevant to the progression of your story to reveal the depth of your personality, character, intellectualism, and maturity.
Sprinkled Humor
Some people think putting on a comedy act will entice pleasure in admission officers so they try to write the funniest main essays they can. However, understanding the difference between mainstream comedy which includes anything hilarious including vulgarity, and intellectual humor that lives on wit is very important. Wit is not funny in the common sense of things, but the clever use of well paced metaphor and provision of relief through dignified self depreciation. Think American politician versus comedian.
So use humor, not comedy, in moderation because your focus should be on answering the serious question in a way that can bring a smile to the admission officer’s lips at your cleverness rather than leave the admission officer impressed with a joke that borders on foolishness.
Voice = (Uniqueness + Tone) X (Pride + Humility)
Another complicated task in the main essay is providing the essay with a voice that balances uniqueness with digestible tone even while dosing the essay with a mixture of pride and humility. Be unique, but have a tone that makes you sound like a likable and approachable person. Having pride is important to self esteem, but remember that true self esteem is only possessed by those with humility that shows flexibility to learn and generosity that knows that accomplishments equate higher responsibilities in fulfilling the needs of others.
Character
Colleges actually rate students on “character and personal qualities” because the applicant’s personhood (인간성) is a core part of the holistic admission process. In fact, character is so important that it is measured in four parts of the application: 1) extracurricular activities 2) essays 3) recommendations 4) interviews. So seniors, remember that when writing the main essay, stating a character trait is different from having the same be pronounced in all four parts so reflect on the four parts honestly so you can claim for a supportable, evidence based character. Juniors, sophomores, and freshmen must therefore remember that to be able to claim for the best character you possibly can in the application essay, you must work on strengthening the four parts way before senior year.
