미국대학 입시- AP/IB의 선택

미국 명문대학을 꿈꾸는 수많은 학생과 학부모들 사이에 AP와 IB는 불가피한 논쟁거리 중 하나이다. 국제적으로 IB를 더 선호하는 추세임에도 불구하고, 미국 내에서 AP 커리큘럼을 채택한 학교는 14,000여 개로 1,000여 개에 불과한 IB학교에 비해 압도적으로 많다. 하지만 프로그램의 우월성을 논하기보다 학생 개인에게 맞는 커리큘럼을 선택하는 것에 집중해야 한다.
IB. IB 는 거시적이고 통합적인 교육 프로그램으로 작문과 분석적 사고를 강조한다. IB 디플로마 과정은 넓은 범위의 고급 과정 이수를 의미하며, 이를 통해 학생의 전반적인 학문적 강점을 증명할 수 있다. IB 과정은 2 년에 걸쳐 진행되기 때문에 해당 과목에 대한 다양한 사고와 깊이 있는 학문적 이해가 가능한 반면, 관심분야에 맞추어 다양한 과정을 선택하기에는 제한적이다. 따라서 IB는 광범위한 학문적 이해 능력이 뛰어나고, 끈기가 있는 학생에게 적합하다.
AP. 1년 단위로 진행되는 AP수업은 IB에 비해 과목선택이 자유롭고 학생의 지적 목표에 맞추어 다양한 학습이 가능하다. 작문(Writing)은 그 동안 AP의 약점으로 여겨져 왔는데, 최근 이를 보완하기 위해 AP Capstone 과정이 도입되었고 수업은 AP 세미나와 AP 리서치로 나누어 진행된다. 대부분의 미국대학은 학점을 인정할 때 AP와 IB 교과목에 동일한 가중치를 부여하지만, AP과정을 IB에 비해 더 높은 수준으로 인정하기도 한다. AP 프로그램은 지적 유연성과 독립성을 지닌 학생들에게 유리하며, 상대적으로 짧은 기간 내 수업이 진행되므로 과목 단위의 깊고 빠른 이해능력이 요구된다.
미국대학 입시에서는 AP/ IB를 떠나 그 안에서 이루어내는 학업적 성취와 학생만의 특성이 나타나는 프로필이 매우 중요하다. 대학은 과외 활동을 비롯한 다양한 배움의 기회를 추구하는 지원자를 선호하는데 이는 점수를 위한 것이 아닌 자발적인 선택에 의한 경험이라는 사실을 전제로 한다. 따라서 커리큘럼 선택만큼 중요한 것은 주어진 기회를 자신에게 맞추어 활용하는 것이다. 외부에서 만들어지는 리서치페이퍼에만 의존하기보다, 학교 수업에 해당하는 AP Research나 IB Extended Essay 를 통해 활동뿐 아니라 교과 과정의 결과로 관심분야 및 연구 주제가 돋보이게 할 방법을 찾도록 하자.

Whether deciding which high school to attend or currently in high school, AP versus IB becomes an inevitable debate among students and parents preparing for admission into top US colleges. The IB is more recognized internationally, but the US is overwhelmingly AP, with 14,000 AP schools versus 1,000 IB schools in the US. The debate, however, should be less about which program is better, and more about the individual student.
IB
With a strong concentration on writing and analytical thinking, IB exams are purely open ended questions. Also, pursuing an IB diploma means that a wide breadth of advanced coursework is required, so the IB can persuade colleges of your holistic academic strength. On the downside, with each IB course spanning across two years, your ability to concentrate in interest areas with numerous advanced classes is limited. IB program is best for students who are broadly strong, with sustainable work ethics that can span across multiple years.
AP
Providing single year advanced college level courses, AP wins over the IB in flexibility, which provides room for customizing your learning to better fit your intellectual goals. Writing, which used to be considered AP’s weakness versus IB, has been remedied through AP Capstone, which is a two year sequence of AP Seminar and AP Research. Also, since US colleges generally place a 1 to 1 weight between AP and IB coursework when granting college credit, AP provides more advanced coursework count value than IB. AP program should be chosen by students who are independent and intellectually flexible, with the ability to work on relatively strict deadlines.
In an ideal world, colleges would be able to consider a student through the full spectrum of strengths developed by both the AP and IB programs. Thankfully, there are ways to create the full spectrum in your profile, and step one is to correctly understand the strengths and weaknesses of your curriculum type by leveraging the opportunities granted by the other great, and personal, learning experience: extracurriculars. Significance of extracurriculars in helping colleges deeply understand applicants derives from the fact that none of these engagements were graded, therefore purely voluntary. Being voluntary, students tend to reveal their true selves during the course of their various time investments. Moreover, with AP Capstone, AP students can now, and should, work on pointing their research topic as resulting from coursework as well as extracurriculars. So to get admitted into top US colleges, work on building your unique profile that considers the academics as well as extracurriculars equally.
