[미국대학 입시] COVID-19 대학의 온라인 수업, 한국 유학생의 고민

코로나19 (COVID-19)의 맹공으로 세계 경제가 위축되면서 내수에서 수출에 이르기까지 모든 주요 경제가 무너지고 있다. 전염병 대유행과의 싸움이 장기전으로 돌입하면서 전 세계 국고는 이미 바닥을 치기 시작하였고 살아남기 위해 고군분투중인 기업에 대한 경제 지원 자금은 줄어들면서 다수의 글로벌 금융전문가들은 어두운 전망을 내 놓는다. 또한 경제 분석가들은 다국적 거대 기업을 포함한 다수의 기업들이 앞으로 약 6개월에서 1년 사이에 전례 없는 대량 채무불이행 상태에 직면할 것이라는 암울한 예측을 쏟아낸다. 이러한 현실 속에서 미국 및 해외 유학생 자녀를 둔 많은 학부모들은 비싼 교육비가 가까운, 또 먼 미래에 투자 가치가 있는지 의문을 제기한다.
많은 학생과 학부모들, 특히 9월 대학 입학을 앞둔 신입생들은 온라인 학습으로 전환된 대학 일정을 보며 한 학기 또는 한 해 휴학을 고려해야 하는지 고민에 빠진다. 온라인 수업을 통해 동일한 학위를 취득한다 하더라도, COVID-19 이전의 일반적인 캠퍼스 내 학습과 비교하면 분명 한계가 있기 때문이다. 또한 대학 교육은 학위를 취득하기 위한 수업 이수만이 아니라 대학 생활 속 다양한 경험, 캠퍼스 내 접근 가능한 수많은 자원 및 기회, 동기 및 선후배와 형성되는 네트워크, 세계적 리더인 교수와 얼굴을 맞대고 논의할 수 있는 기회 등 그 가치가 상당하다. 이러한 부분은 대학 입학 지원서, 특히 ‘왜 우리 대학에서 공부하기를 원하는가?’ 등을 포함한 에세이 질문을 살펴보면 정확히 드러난다.
위기의 순간에 최선의 결정을 내리는 가장 좋은 방법은, 모든 과잉 문제를 제거하고 핵심 근본이 무엇인지 집중해 보는 것이다. 아무리 이상적으로 대학 학위의 경제적 이익을 넘어 교육의 가치를 내세운다 하더라도, 사실 그 길의 종점에는 학생의 학력에 걸맞는 직업 및 목표가 있어야 한다. 목표와 직업에 대한 정확한 인식이 부족하다면, 학생은 교육 여정의 끝을 제대로 맺지 못할 수 있다.
COVID-19는 우리의 삶의 많은 부분을 변화시켰지만 유행병은 지나갈 것이고, 바이러스 이후 경제회복은 코로나19와 함께 발생했던 경제적 하락과 비슷한 비율로 상승할 것이다. 코로나 상황 속에서 경제를 재개했던 지난 5,6월의 짧은 두 달여 기간 동안 미국 내 750여만 개의 일자리가 회복된 것이 그 예라고 할 수 있다. 이는 2007-2009년 대불황을 일으킨 서브프라임 모기지 붕괴, Y2K에서 비롯된 2001년 닷컴 거품, 1990-1991년 저축과 대출 위기 등 그동안의 다른 경기 침체와는 달리 뿌리 깊은 경제적 결함에서 기인한 상황이 아니라는 점이다.
공중보건 전문가들은 현재 의료 혁신 속도와 향후 의료 제품의 제조 및 유통을 고려할 때 COVID-19가 향후 1-2년 가량 더 지속될 것이라고 입을 모은다. 이렇듯 경제의 회복, 팽창 시기를 파악하는 것은 학생들에게 매우 중요하다. 경제는 이들의 경력 및 연봉과 밀접한 연관성이 있기 때문이다. 또한 경제 분석가들은 약10여년 주기로 움직이는 경제 성장과 수축의 주기를 감안하여 2021-22년부터 경제가 다시 성장하기 시작하여 2026-27년까지 약 5년에 걸쳐 역사적 성장을 이룰 것으로 예측한다. 따라서 학업을 유지하며 또다른 기회를 찾는 것이 통계학적으로 유리하다는 관측이다.
온라인 수업, 유학생에게 기회로 다가와
온라인 수업은 선행학습 등 추가적인 학업을 통한 성적 향상뿐 아니라, 여가시간을 활용한 자기계발 및 SAT, GMAT, GRE, MCAT, LSAT등 공인 시험을 준비할 수 있는 기회가 된다. 또한 제4차산업혁명 즉, 융합의 시대에 컴퓨터 사이언스 및 코딩은 컴퓨터공학, 화학, 빅데이터 뿐 아니라 전형적 문과, 비즈니스, 심지어 아트 전공 학생에게 조차도 필수적인 과목이 되었고, 준비된 학생에게는 대학으로 돌아갔을 때 보다 많은 기회가 주어질 것임을 기억해야 한다. 이렇듯 학생들은 여느 경제 주기의 시작점과 같이 포스트코로나 시대가 새로운 직업 기회의 도래라는 점을 인식하여야 한다. 이미 일부 새로운 산업의 형성이 시작되었고, 대학은 사회적 흐름과 기술의 변화를 깨달아 핵심 두뇌력을 공급할 학생들을 선호한다. 대학 신입생은 올바른 대학 과정을 선택하고, 고등학생은 새로운 진로 및 대학 전공으로 도달할 다양한 기회를 탐색해 관심사 및 활동에 초점을 맞춘 스토리와 경험을 전략화 해야 한다. 다음 칼럼을 통해 유망 직업과 전공에 대해 살펴보도록 하자.

College, Jobs and Economy for US International Students in a COVID-19 World
As the onslaught of COVID-19 continues to envelope the world, the global economy is shrinking rapidly. Everything, from domestic consumption to exports have fallen in every major economy. As the fight against the global pandemic is proving to be a drawn out battle, government coffers around the world are already beginning to bottom out, so economic assistance funds to corporations fighting for survival are expected to thin away, which will further exacerbate the economy, according to a number of global banking giants. Economic analysts grimly predict that businesses, including multinational giants, will then begin to default at historical volumes over the next six months to one year. Economic outlook is flaky at best, even for the most extreme optimists, and many students and parents are beginning to question whether the high cost of education will be worth the investment.
In fact, many of my own students and parents, especially those who will become first-year college students in September, have asked me whether they should consider deferring for a semester or year, given the either half to full conversion to online learning. After all, US college tuition is the steepest in the world and taking courses online, even if leading to the same degree, feels subpar to the fully on-campus learning that was the norm before COVID-19. Undeniably, college education encapsulates not only taking the classes to fulfill the requirements to obtain a degree but also getting to experience college life, access on-campus resources, network with classmates and gain face-time with professors who are world class leaders in their fields. In fact, variations of these benefits populate large portions of students’ college application essays, especially in the supplementary applications that specifically ask, Why do you want to study at our university?
During times of crisis, the best way to identify the best decision is to rid the problem of all excesses and focus only on what the true fundamental is. However idealistic one may be in touting the value of education beyond the economic benefits of a college degree, at the end of the road there must be a career building job befitting a student’s educational background. The availability or lack of jobs can make or break the end of a student’s educational journey.
COVID-19 has changed our lives but the pandemic will pass and the economic upturn post the virus will be of the same meteoric proportion as the economic fall that came with COVID-19, according to many economic analysts. Reopening the economy between May and June, although a dramatic failure in the fight against the new coronavirus, showed an unprecedented recovery of 7.5 million jobs in the US economy in the two short months. The fact is, measures like social distancing, although necessary for public health respective of the importance of disease control at the moment, is an artificial dampener in the economy that makes this recession unlike other similarly sized economic recessions, which resulted from deeply rooted economic flaws, such as the subprime mortgage meltdown that produced the 2007-2009 Great Recession, the Y2K ignited dotcom bubble that burst in 2001, and the Savings and Loan Crisis of 1990-1991.
Disease and public health experts are concerting that COVID-19 will continue to plague the world for another one to two years, when considering the rate of medical breakthroughs and expected future manufacturing and distribution of medical products. Knowing this timeline is extremely important for college-bound students, because those who graduate during the years in which the economy is either recovering or expanding are the best off in launching their careers on a high-note. Also considering that economic cycles of growth and shrinkage tend to move in 10-year averages, economic analysts predict that from 2021 or 2022 the economy will begin growing again and continue the growth at historic proportions for five years or until 2026/2027, before another economic downturn comes to taper down job creation. So rather than pausing formal education because classes have gone online, it is statistically more favorable to continue schooling.
Students, especially US college bound international students, must also remember that as was the case following the start of every economic cycle, a Post COVID-19 world will spell the arrival of new career opportunities. Different industries are already beginning to take shape even as some currently small industries are set for dramatic growth, and colleges will favor educating students who will supply the brain power for these industries over those who fail to realize the changes to labor requirements and skills.
If you are currently a college student, whether a first year or fourth year, adjust your education by selecting the right college coursework. If you are currently a high school student, prepare to explore the variety of opportunities that are arriving with new career and college major options, and strategize on ways to verifiably display your focus into a defined set of relevant interests and activities.

Basically, by the time today’s college freshman graduate, the global economy will be heading toward peak recovery, including those of the US and Korea, and it is in the student’s favor to graduate at a time of high economic optimism.
Online coursework also provides college students, especially freshmen, with the benefit of taking complete control of their fall semester’s academic output. Statistically, freshman first semester is the worst performing semester, especially for Korean international students, but online classes provide students with the ability to receive academic support through private tutoring, to truly set the strong foundation that is nnecessary for academic success in the more advanced classes. This is especially important for students aiming to take classes or pursue a degree in unfamiliar fields, such as a chemical engineering student who wants to take computer science classes to ride the wave of the increasing role of computer modeling in research or an economics major who wants to pursue coursework in machine learning and data science to accurately analyze market sentiment based on big data.
Multidiciplinary academic foundation, in fact, is something high school students who are preparing for top US college admissions should also explore as deeply as they can, to reflect the coursework advising given by the academic deans to their own students at such colleges. In the simplest sense, the college admissions process is a filter for identifying students who have the potential to best utilize a college’s resources and opportunities to build the careers that can best return the merit of recognition back to the college.
