[미국대학 입시] COVID-19와 커먼앱의 변화

지난 8월 1일, 약 900여개에 달하는 미국대학들이 공통으로 사용하는 대학 지원 시스템인 Common App이 2020-21년 원서를 오픈하였다. 대학은 COVID-19라는 대 유행병이 가져온 불확실성에 초점을 맞추고 원서 안에 시대적 흐름을 반영하는 변화들을 동반하였다. 원서 내의 작은 변화가 무엇을 상징하는지 대학이 바라보는 깊은 내적 의미를 살펴볼 필요가 있다.
Main Essay (메인 에세이)
커먼앱 메인 에세이의 경우 표면적으로는 7가지 질문이 지난해와 동일하기 때문에, 입시에서 학생들의 소프트 데이터(수업의 내용과 레벨, 활동, 프로젝트의 전공과의 연관성, 리더십, 추천서 등)에 집중할 것이라는 핵심이 눈에 띄지 않을 수 있다. 대학들은 COVID-19로 인해 발생한 학교 교육과 시험의 한계를 뛰어넘어 신입생 개개인의 소프트 데이터에 집중하겠다는 목표를 밝힌바 있다. 올해 편입 원서에서 그동안 가장 핵심이 되어 왔던 ‘Why Transfer?’ 질문을 메인 에세이와 동일한 주제로 대체한 이유도 같은 선상에 있다.
7가지 질문은 다음과 같다.
1. 자신이 누구인지에 대한 통찰력, 배경, 자아, 흥미 및 재능을 제공할 수 있는 의미 있는 스토리를 공유하라.
2. 당신이 마주한 장애, 도전, 좌절 또는 실패로부터 배운 경험을 자세히 이야기 하라.
3. 어떤 신념을 의심하거나 이에 도전했던 경험을 서술하고 그에 따른 결과는 무엇이었는가?
4. 지적 도전, 도덕적 딜레마 등 당신에게 주어진 중요한 문제를 어떻게 해결하였는지, 이를 해결하기 위한 단계는 무엇이었는지, 왜 당신에게 특별한 의미가 있는지 설명하라.
5. 자신이나 다른 사람을 새롭게 이해하게 된 개인적인 성장, 업적, 이벤트가 있다면 논하라.
6. 시간 가는 줄 모를 정도로 마음을 사로잡힌 토픽, 아이디어, 개념이 있다면 묘사하고 그 이유를 설명하라.
7. 자신이 원하는 자유 주제로 서술하라. (프리 토픽)
COVID-19 Prompt 추가
전세계적인 유행병이 지원자들에게 보편적으로 영향을 끼친 현실 속에서, 학생들의 COVID-19 관련 에세이가 쏟아지는 것을 피하고자 대학과 Common App은 COVID-19 특정 질문을 Additional Information 공간에 추가하였다. 이는 최대 250단어 선택 형 질문으로, 지원생이 COVID-19 및 자연재해로 받은 영향 즉, 변화된 가족 상황, 건강과 웰빙, 안전, 향후 계획, 거주 및 고용 차질로 인한 경제적 어려움, 원격 수업 및 컴퓨터 기술, 학습 공간, 교육적 어려움 등에 대한 설명을 요구한다. 또한 가족 상실 등 중대한 개인적 변화를 겪은 경우를 제외하고 내신 성적이 크게 떨어진 경우 칼리지 카운슬러의 추천서 안에 그 내용이 언급되어야 한다. 학교 카운슬러와 긴밀히 협조하여 원서 및 에세이, 추천서의 내용이 상이하지 않도록 주의하자.
College Counselor 추천서의 변화
-추가된 COVID-19 관련 주제(최대 500단어, 선택 사항)에서는 칼리지 카운슬러가 학생들의 참작해야 할 상황을 포함하여 교육에서 경험한 변화에 대한 정보를 대학에 제출할 수 있다.
-한 질문 당 한 개 이상의 파일을 업로드할 수 있으며, 이는 칼리지 카운슬러가 작성하는 추천서의 중요도와 원서에서 차지하는 비중이 늘어났음을 의미한다.
학생은 칼리지 카운슬러 및 교과목 선생님과의 소통에 더욱 집중해야 하며, 추천서와 원서에 들어가는 COVID-19 질문에 대한 내용을 일치시켜야 한다. 그 어느 해보다, 학생이 대학 지원서에서 그려내려고 하는 자신만의 이야기나 차별화되는 경험담을 부각시키기 위해 칼리지 카운슬러의 전폭적인 지원이 필요함을 기억하자. 이는 올해 지원하는 학생들이 자신의 어떠한 부분을 부각시킬지 판별하는 능력을 발휘해야 하며, 이러한 점을 칼리지 카운슬러에게 효과적으로 전달하기 위한 적극적인 전략을 강구해야 함을 의미한다.
Activities 활동 섹션의 변화
올해 입시에서는 코로나19로 인해 보편성을 잃은 학교 성적과 공인인증 시험을 대체하기 위해 개인 데이터를 강조한다. 특히 커먼앱 활동 섹션을 살펴보면 ‘기관 명’과 ‘리더십 설명’을 위한 공간이 추가되었는데, 이는 대학 입시를 위한 무분별한 활동 참여를 분별하고 학생의 캐릭터를 보다 깊게 이해하는 방법의 일환으로 핵심을 ‘역할’에 집중하려는 시도이다.
이렇듯 학생의 에세이와 추천서에서 나타나는 소프트 데이터의 일치뿐 아니라, 내신 및 공인 시험 점수 등 하드 데이터에 의존하는 대신 깊은 개인적 통찰력을 제공하도록 프로파일 빌딩의 전략을 세우도록 하자.

Commonapp Changes 2020-2021
On August 1st, the Commonapp, a college application system which is used by nearly 900 American colleges, launched for the 2020-2021 application cycle. A number of important changes, which are reflective of the direction that colleges have targeted their focus on as the world wrestles with the uncertainties brought by the global pandemic, accompany this year’s Commonapp. However, these changes may not seem apparent to applicants or parents because the differences are either subtle, seemingly circumstantial given the times, or outside the purview of the applicant’s application altogether.
Common App Essay
As for the Common App’s essay questions, there are absolutely no changes to last year’s set of seven prompts so on the surface, the lack of changes hide the fact that colleges will be placing extra emphasis on the soft data that students provide. In fact, the character insight provided by these questions were considered important enough to replace the traditional transfer applicant question, which asks how transferring to a new school will help in fulfilling educational goals. Basically, colleges want to anchor their admission decisions on the applicant’s personal assets, given the interruptions to normal schooling and testing brought by COVID-19.
Paraphrased, the seven prompts are:
- Share your story, which provides meaningful insight into who you are.
- Recount what you learned from an obstacle, challenge, setback or failure you encountered.
- Reflect on your experience of questioning or challenging a belief.
- Describe how you have or will solve a problem that is important to you.
- Discuss a personal growth that led to a new understanding of yourself or others.
- Describe something that captivates you so fully that you even lose track of time.
- Any topic that you would like to write about.
COVID-19 Prompt Added
Considering how the global pandemic has affected applicants universally while wanting to avoid a tsunami of students from submitting COVID-19 topics as the main essay, colleges have worked with Common App to provide a COVID-19 specific essay question. The 250-word optional question asks for applicants to describe how COVID-19 or a natural disaster affected the applicant’s health, loss of family, economic difficulties that led to housing or employment disruptions, shifting family obligations that led to changed future plans, and educational difficulties, including access to reliable technology and quiet study spaces.”
Applicants whose school grades were significantly affected in the absence of significant personal challenges or family losses or changes must work closely with their college counselors to relay a consistent story to colleges, given the changes to the Common App’s college counselor recommendation section.
College Counselor Recommendation Changes
- Optional COVID-19 related 500-word additional statement, which asks college counselors to share information on the changes students experienced in their education, including extenuating circumstances.
- Ability to upload more than one file per question, which significantly boosts the weight of the college counselor’s recommendation.
Failing to match stories for the COVID-19 prompts between the student and the college counselor’s will be hugely detrimental to an applicant’s admissions results. Meanwhile, more than in any other year, the story or unique asset a student tries to portray in the college applications must be fully supported by the college counselor. This means students applying this year must exercise the ability to discern which assets to sell, and exert active strategy for effectively communicating these points to college counselors.
Other Notable Common App Upgrades
Befitting this year’s emphasis on personal data over school grades and test scores, students will be able to
- Indicate proficiency in more than one “Other” language. Therefore, colleges are considering multilingualism as a variable in admissions as a way to address their concerns over how COVID-19 may affect campus diversity.
- In the Activities Section, an extra box was created to separate “Organization name” and “Position or Leadership description.” The change places emphasis on a student’s role as a way to personally understand the student, which responds to a growing concern among colleges for students who thoughtlessly join activities for the sake of college admissions rather than genuine personal goals.
Given the changes to this year’s Common App, the evident truth is, the soft data provided by students and college counselors must match, and students who provide deeper personal insight will have a significant advantage over those who decide to relay superficial accomplishments or rely on the strength of their hard data, such as school grades and tests.
