The importance of the role of essays in US college admissions is common knowledge, so students aspiring to get admitted into the Ivy League and top American colleges spend countless hours spanning over months to present their best story. For most, the essay process starts with rummaging through past experiences to brainstorm idea lists, webs or clouds that are then filtered to a few candidates. Writing drafts and polishing their writing then ensues, to produce a final product that, hopefully, would hook admission officers, effectively persuading them to place them into the accepted pile.
Unfortunately, there are three significant problems in the above mentioned college application essay writing process. Foremost, students discover that the personal narrative format of college application essays require a first-person voice, which contrasts with the third-person academic writing they have been taught by their teachers during their entire school career. Students also suddenly find themselves needing to avoid the familiar three-part essay format of introduction, body and conclusion that they had also been taught in school. The last problem is with the assumption that the role of the college essay is to persuade admission officers with a convincing story, where the greater the hook the greater the impact.

Fortunately, adding truth to the adage that leaders are made, not born, great storytelling is not a talent endowed by nature but a skill that can be learned.
Check if your essay has these 5 Elements of Storytelling
- Plot is made of the events that come together to form your story. Rather than looking for hooks, look at the total effect of how your experience will impact the heart of the admission officer.
- Setting is not just about location and time, but a carefully crafted environment that reels in empathy. A poorly done setting can make the story feel forced, so make it fit the story to make the event believable.
- Character is more than the standard set of protagonist, antagonist and supporting characters. The point of a college essay is character exposition, so growth and development has more impact than claims of achievement or uniqueness.
- Conflict should focus on something very personal rather than stem from a blockbuster external influence. For example, although the discovery of CRISPR is a greater historical event, it is far better to write about how the effect of diabetes in your family wrestling against your passion in art produced your unique path.
- Theme, or moral of the story, must be personal and considering the focus of the college application essay on growth and development, serve as a path opener that defined who you are rather than a summative reflection on the significance of the experience.
Emotional graphing
Introduction/setup, conflict, and resolution, or man falls into but gets out of a hole, is a tried and tired story format that places the importance on the experience rather than the person. Instead, considering the personal nature of the college application essay, and the need to connect emotionally with the admission officer, work out the emotional journey of your essay before you start writing to figure out the magnitude and the sort of impact your story will have.
