[미국대학입시] 성공적인 과외활동(Extracurricular Activities)
경쟁이 아닌 협업과 팀워크에 있다.

미국 입시에서 SAT가 옵션(Optional)이 되고, SAT Subject 시험 마저 폐지되면서 미국대학 입시를 준비하는 한국 학생들은 아카데믹 공백을 채우기 위해 공격적으로 학문적, 활동적 경쟁에 뛰어들고 있다. 이러한 노력들 중에는 잘 비치된 전략도 있지만 상대적으로 불충분한 전략이 대다수이다. 예를 들어 학교 성적, 난이도 높은 AP, HL 등의 수업에 집중하는 것은 좋은 대입 전략의 시작이라 할 수 있다. 하지만 아이비리그 및 명문 대학의 지원자들에게는 높은 성적 및 도전적인 과목 선택이 필수적인 것임을 감안하면, 아카데믹 이상의 과외활동(Extracurricular Activities)을 통해 경쟁력을 나타내야 한다는 결론이 나온다. 경쟁적으로 만든 인위적인 모습이 아닌, 내적 동기와 발전되어가는 과정이 보이는 자신만의 프로필을 준비해야 한다.
대부분의 학생들이 활동을 준비하는 방법
리더십이 미국 명문대 입시에 중요하다는것은 대다수의 사람들이 의견을 같이한다. Common App에서 Activities 10개 칸을 채우고 각 활동 마다 리더십과 자신의 역할 및 포지션을 설명하기 위해, 다수의 한국 학생들은 학교 동아리에서 리더의 자리를 놓고 경쟁하고, 더 나아가 자신만의 학교 클럽, 학생 단체를 설립하는데 집중한다.
자원봉사 역시 가능한 여러 분야에 걸쳐 의무적인 참여를 하고 그 중 하나가 입학사정관의 관심을 얻게 되기를 바라며 다른 학생들보다 국내.외를 막론하고 더 넓은 세상, 더 많은 사회적 이슈에 관심을 보였음을 증명하려 안간힘을 쓴다. 또한 원서에서 활동 시간뿐 아니라 개인적 중요도 순으로의 나열을 요구함을 고려해, 다른 지원자들과 다르게 지역사회를 발전시켰다는 증거로 학교를 비롯한 공동체에서 무슨 역할을 했는지를 두고 경쟁한다.
대학 지원서의 ‘수상경력’ 칸을 채우기 위해, AMC와 USACO, 토론, 연설, 에세이 콘테스트 등에 이르기까지 다양한 대회에서 우승을 차지하기 위해 고군분투하는 것은 미국 입시를 준비하는 학생들의 일상이 되었다. 대부분의 학생들은 더 많은 상을 받지 못했다는 고민을 하고, 수상경력이 화려한 학생들은 대회 우승을 직업으로 여기는 듯 하다.
실제 대학이 지원서를 평가하는 방법
아이비리그 및 미국 명문 대학은 학생에 대한 기록을 놓고 예측 정보를 발굴해내기 위해 입증된 방법을 통해 정보를 깊이 분석하여 명목 데이터의 범위와 하위 데이터를 조사하는 놀라운 현실을 입시생들은 받아들여야 한다. 스탠포드 대학 입학처와 긴밀히 협력하는 AAA Lab에서는 생산성과 협업 사이의 긍정적인 상관관계를 식별하는 게임이론 기반의 적응형 학습 평가를 사용하는 혁신적인 접근 방식을 적용 중이다. 대부분의 한국 지원자들이 추구하는 ‘경쟁’이 아닌 ‘협업과 팀워크’를 극대화하는 프로필을 만들고 입학사정관들이 높이 평가하는 ‘리더십의 자질’을 직접적으로 활동을 통해 입증해야 한다. 프린스턴 대학 출판부 (Princeton University Press)가 펴낸 책 ‘Two Cheers for Higher Education’에서는 문제 해결의 중요성을 강조하였는데, 이는 대부분의 지원자들이 대학 지원 후크로 여기는 명목상의 활동 및 경쟁 성취도를 훌쩍 뛰어넘는 수준이라는 것을 기억해야 한다. 한편 하버드대 교육언론 (Harvard Education Press)의 저서 ‘On My Own’에서는 특히 STEM 분야 학생 인재 발굴에 있어 고등학교 교사와 깊고 의미 있는 파트너십을 맺는 것이 중요하다고 지적했는데, 이는 예비 공학도들은 교사 및 동료들과의 교제가 상대적으로 적을 것이라는 학부모들의 일반적인 가설과 상반된다.
성공을 위한 입시 전략
더 많은 성과를 거두기 위해 경쟁하기보다, 개인, 학업 및 활동의 여정 중에 발견한 문제에 대한 해결책을 어떻게 개발하였는지를 선보이는 것이 중요한 지표가 된다. 대학 지원서에 비춰질 더 높은 수준의 비판적 사고와 분석 기술을 활용하여 프로필을 만들어야 한다. 즉, 미국 명문 대학에서 제공하는 수많은 기회를 성공적으로 활용할 수 있다는 자신의 가능성에 대한 블루프린트를 원서에 나타내야 한다. 성공적인 대학 원서는 기존의 렌즈가 아닌 전혀 다른 렌즈를 통해 세상에 질문을 던지고 있다. 학생이 현실 세계의 해결책을 추구하면서 모으고, 지속하고, 관리할 수 있었던 전략적 사고와 집단적 노력을 조명하는 준비를 해나가야 한다.

With the vacuum left by the SAT becoming optional and SAT Subjects getting shut down, students and parents interested in US college admissions are enlisting into a sort of academic arms race to fill the academic void with other achievements. Some efforts are well placed but insufficient alone; concentrating on raising school grades and course rigor are great places to start, but considering that competitive applicants to top US colleges such as the Ivy League and its peers share a similar set of high grades and challenging courses, the focus naturally falls on trying to differentiate through extracurricular achievements. In theory, this focus on areas beyond school academics is fundamentally correct, but many students and parents expend their time and energy on pursuing what they incorrectly assume are considered the most important by admission officers.
Almost everyone presumes that leadership is extremely important to getting admitted to top US colleges. After all, the Common App provides 10 slots for listing activities, and each slot provides an area for describing leadership and position. So students compete for leadership positions in school clubs. Community service hours are also stacked up like bricks to towering heights, since showing more concern for the world and improving the world more than other applicants must provide a competitive advantage. After all, the college application also has space for inputting information on the amount of time committed to the activities that a student has pursued throughout high school. To fill the ‘Awards and Honors’ slots on the college application, training to win in competitions, from the AMC and USACO to debate, speech, and writing becomes part of daily high school life.
Top US colleges, however, consider applications on levels beyond nominal data by deeply analyzing information. Stanford University’s AAALab, which collaborates closely with Stanford Admissions, researches to develop innovative approaches to using game-based, adaptive learning assessments based on the positive correlation between productivity and collaboration. So, working to build an extracurricular profile that maximizes collaboration and teamwork, not competitive tendencies, provides a direct response to the sort of leadership qualities sought after by admission officers. In “Two Cheers for Higher Education,” a book published by Princeton University Press, the importance of real world problem solving was also stressed, which is by many intellectual degrees beyond beyond the nominal list of achievements that most applicants list on their applications. Meanwhile, Harvard Education Press’ book, “On My Own” pointed out the importance of forming deep and meaningful partnerships with high school teachers in identifying and developing student talent, especially in STEM fields.
Strategy 1
By perusing the student’s application for higher-level critical thinking and analytic skills, admission officers look to understand how an applicant was able to develop solutions to problems discovered during personal and academic journeys. So a successful college application questions the world through a different rather than conventional lens, and sheds light on the sort of strategic thinking and group effort that a student was able to muster, sustain, and manage in the pursuit of a real world solution rather than focusing on a list of achievements.
Strategy 2
While the student’s application and essays comprise the main deck of document that college admission officers assess, the above qualities must also be reflected in the student’s teacher and counselor recommendations, which must display how a student had developed the academic opportunities and achievements with personality traits that brought learning to life.
Therefore, communicating deeply and regularly with teachers who will be your recommendation writers is one of the most important tasks that students aiming for admission into top colleges must take up.
