미국 대학에서 인정하는 고등학교 졸업장은 2가지가 있다. 일반 고등학교 졸업장과 온라인 고등학교 졸업장이다. 지난 칼럼을 통해 언급했듯 매년 홈스쿨링 학생 수가 4~8% 가량씩 증가하다 최근 코로나로 인해 그 수가 급상승한 가운데, 스탠포드, 듀크, 존스 홉킨스 등의 대학에서는 홈스쿨링 학생들의 색다른 경험을 오히려 선호한다고 밝힌바 있다. 국내 입시를 준비중이던 고등학생이나 재수생, 국내 대학 휴학생들의 경우에도 GED와 TOEFL만으로 미국 대학입시를 준비하는 비율이 눈에 띄게 늘고 있다. 고등 검정고시에는 GED, HiSET, TASC등 여러 옵션이 있으나 그중 GED가 가장 잘 알려져 있으므로 이를 바탕으로 설명한다.
미국검정고시를 준비하는 학생들이 가장 많이 하는 질문은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 검정고시가 미명문대학들의 충분한 인정을 받고 있는가? 둘째, GED 점수가 고등학교 GPA로 인정되는가? 셋째, 어느 정도의 토플 점수를 요구하는가?
미국대학의 검정고시 인정여부
GED(General Educational Development)는 전 세계적으로 가장 잘 알려져 있는 미국 검정고시 중 하나로 영어, 수학, 사회, 과학 4가지 영역으로 시험을 치르며 국내에서도 응시가 가능하다. 현재 미국 내 거의 모든 대학들이 GED를 인정하고 있으며, 아이비리그를 비롯한 미국명문대학은 신입생의 일부를 검정고시 지원자로 채운다고 알려져 있는데, 이는 학업과 인생 경험에서 오는 지적 다양성 즉, 미국 명문대학에 홈스쿨링 학생이 증가하는 이유와 동일하다. 또한 캘리포니아 대학교(UC), 미시간대(U-M), 펜실베니아 주립대(Penn State), 뉴욕 주립대(SUNY) 등의 대형 명문주립대학은 GED 지원자에 대한 관심이 매우 강하며 입시 결과 또한 높은 것으로 알려져 있다.
GED점수를 GPA로 환산
대학은 공식화된 변환 차트를 사용하여 모든 학생의 GPA를 4.0의 점수로 환산한다. 즉 7점 만점의 IB 학교 졸업생이나 100점 기준의 점수를 받은 학생이나 모두 입학사정 시 4.0으로 점수가 변환된다. 이와 마찬가지로 GED 상위 8%에 해당하는 200~175점 구간은 4.0, 174~173는 3.7, 172~171는 3.3으로 변환된다. 또한 200~175의 점수를 받은 학생을 GED College Ready + Credit그룹으로 분류되며, 일부 대학에서는 위 학생들에게 AP 점수에 상응하는 학점을 부여하기도 한다. 174~165점에 해당하는 두 번째 구간은 GED College Ready그룹으로, 이는 많은 대학들이 수업 배치고사 (Placement Test)를 면제하기에 충분한 점수로 인정한다. 이는 한국 내 미국 및 영국 교육과정 기반 대안학교를 다닌 학생 중 상당수에게 대학이 배치고사를 치르도록 요구하는 것과 대비된다. 164~145점은 평균 미국 주립대의 입학 가능 점수로 여겨진다.
TOEFL
미국 입시를 준비하는 학생들의 경우 TOEFL 점수와 대학 순위 사이에 상관관계가 있을 것이라고 여기는 경향이 있다. 하지만 아이비리그 합격생의 평균 TOEFL 점수는 100점으로 NYU, 미시간, USC등과 별반 차이가 없다. 경영학, 정치학 분야에서 매우 우수한 대학인 워싱턴 DC의 조지워싱턴대학이나 보스턴 대학의 경우 토플 평균 90점내외이며, UC Berkeley의 경우 평균 80점에 불과하다. 이는 국내 입시를 준비했던 학생들 역시 충분히 받을만한 성적이다. 미국 대학에서는 TOEFL을 학생의 영어 능력 시험으로 간주하지 입학의 결정적인 요소로 고려하지 않는다는 것을 기억해야 한다.
한국 입시 결과에 만족하지 못한 재수생이나 휴학생, 현재 고등 내신성적이 기대치만큼 나오지 않는 학생, 또는 인서울의 가능성이 낮은 학생이라면 GED 시험 준비를 통해 미국 상위권 대학 입시를 노려보는 것을 추천한다. GED의 경우 큰 시간을 투자하지 않고도 만족할 만한 점수를 낼 수 있고, GED와 토플 준비만으로 미국 대학 진학이 가능하기에 시간을 절약하며 새로운 길을 개척할 수 있다. 다수와 다른 길을 고려한다면 불안감이 따를 수 있지만, 정확히 알고 준비한다면 입시의 성공으로 이어질 기회가 될 수 있다.

GED + Ivy League & Top College Admissions
Currently, American colleges recognize three paths to receiving a high school diploma. The most popular path is to receive a traditional diploma from an American high school, but as the number of homeschoolers continues to rise from 4% to 8% every year, online high school diplomas are now starting to receive as much recognition as traditional high school diplomas by American colleges. In fact, universities such as Stanford, Duke, and Johns Hopkins have explicitly disclosed that they cherish the different intellectual energy that homeschoolers bring to their campuses, as detailed in my last article. For Korean students studying to receive their high school diplomas through online American high schools, they must make sure to reference check the official recognition of the accrediting organization of their respective schools.
Even as the popularity of online American high school diplomas is on the rise, many others are choosing to receive a high school certificate through testing instead. By far the most popular high school equivalent certificate is the GED, but as the number of GED takers is also on the rise, the HiSET and TASC have joined the ecosystem as GED alternatives for American students. Which high school graduation exam a student should take depends on each student’s academic circumstances, goals, and background.
Three major questions arise for parents of Korean students whose children are preparing for the American GED. First, do these exams carry enough recognition by top American colleges? How do colleges read the scores received on the GED for example, and what subjects are covered? Is there anything that one can do to strengthen the academic profile to become more competitive? These are all valid questions that must be addressed.
Colleges that Accept the GED
Currently, almost 100% of American colleges accept the GED, with an increasing number of colleges also beginning to accept the HiSET and TASC. In fact, Ivy League colleges such as Columbia are known to reserve a portion of each freshman class they accept for GED, HiSET, and TASC applicants for the same reason top American colleges claim an increasing appreciation for homeschoolers: intellectual diversity that comes from different academic and life experiences.
Colleges with the strongest interest in GED applicants, however, are large states university systems, such as the University of California (UC), University of Michigan (U-M), Penn State University, and the State University of New York (SUNY).
GED to GPA Conversion
Colleges normalize the student’s GPA by converting grade point averages to a 4.0 scale by using an officialized ratio conversion. An IB student with a 7 for example is seen as equivalent to a 4.0 for example. Likewise, the GED has a conversion table that sets the perfect score “band” of 200 to 175, which is received by the Top 8% of GED test-takers, as equal to 4.0, 174-173 as A-, 172-171 as B+, and so on.
Macroscopically, American colleges consider 200 to 175 to be in the highest band, GED College Ready + Credit, which means some colleges would even give students who receive GED scores in this range college credit like they would for AP scores. The second band between 174 to 165 is GED College Ready, which gives many American colleges enough confidence to waive placement testing. This shows the confidence that American colleges place on GED applicants, especially compared to how many students admitted from American and British curriculum-based high schools in Korea are required by American colleges to take placement exams. A GED score ranging from 145 to 164 is considered a GED Passing Score, which provides the score to apply to an average American state college.
GED and TOEFL for American Universities
Korean applicants tend to assume that there must be a positive correlation between TOEFL scores and college rankings. Surprisingly, the average TOEFL score of applicants who were admitted into Ivy League universities was 100, which was the same for NYU, University of Michigan, and University of Southern California. George Washington University in Washington DC, which is a popular university among American students especially for business and political science but lesser known to Koreans, has an average TOEFL score of 90, while Boston University posts a TOEFL score range between 90 to 100. Meanwhile, UC Berkeley has a TOEFL average of 80 compared to UCLA’s average of 100. In fact, UIUC recorded one of America’s highest TOEFL average, with a range of 102 to 110 for admitted applicants.
Comparing the average TOEFL scores of students accepted into American colleges show that while American colleges do consider TOEFL as proof of a student having the English proficiency to do well in college, they do not consider TOEFL scores to be a decisive factor in admission. The focus is on high school grades or GED scores, and the applicant’s profile instead.
Profile Must Display “Why”
To get accepted into an average American state college, a GED may be enough academically and regular life experiences can also be sufficient. However, top American colleges consider the unique profile of each student as portrayed in the college application, so having strong activities and experiences is a must, just as is the case for homeschoolers with a high school diploma from an online American school. After all, students who are not enrolled in traditional brick-and-mortar high schools must submit an additional essay explaining their academic history. If used effectively, this additional essay can provide a dramatic boost to a homeschooler or GED applicant versus traditional applicants.
Considering an alternative education path can either be unnerving or an exciting opportunity that can lead to rich success. The factor to consider is, American colleges – whether the Ivy League or state universities – are open to students of different experiences, so a homeschooler or GED applicant can apply to top American colleges with as much confidence as their traditional peers. For traditional students, the point to remember here is that yes, grades and SAT scores do matter but as the admissions policies of top American colleges show, having a rich profile of activities and experiences is oftentimes the dealmaker.
