미국대학입시: 차별화된 프로젝트 (Original Summer Project)
전세계적으로 2년 만에 비교적 평범한 여름을 보내고 있다. 기업은 펜데믹 제한에서 벗어나고, 고용 시장은 지난 6개월 전 즈음부터 다시금 회복되고 있다. 특히 입학사정관들은 펜데믹 이후, 학생들이 진정한 열정을 추구하며 여름방학 기간을 활용해 어떻게 자신만의 가치를 만들어 낼지 관심을 집중하고 있다. 이는 유행병이 한창일 때조차도 미국 명문대 입시에 성공한 학생들은 여름방학 기간을 활용해 놀라운 업적을 달성한 결과에 근거한다. 한 예로, 지난해 한 학생은 화상 회의 솔루션을 이용해 사회적 주제에 대한 연구 및 보고를 목표로 하는 고등학생 글로벌 네트워크를 개선하여 학계를 놀라게 하였다. 또 다른 학생은 전염병 상황의 한계로 인해 아프리카 교육 자선단체의 도서 기부 중단을 고려해 물리적 책 대신 전자책 eBook 플랫폼을 구축하였다.
7월의 첫 주, 현재 많은 학생들은 처음 계획과 달리 빠르게 지나가는 시간 앞에서, 또는 계획을 제대로 세우지 못했던 자신을 돌아보며 걱정에 휩싸인다. 현실이 되지 못한 훌륭한 인턴십이나 여름 캠프를 두고 후회하기보다, 코로나 대유행으로 인해 제한되었던 지난 여름방학과는 달리 자신을 세상에 나타내기 위해 분주히 움직이고 있는 수많은 학생들이 있다는 사실을 기억해야 한다. 아이비리그를 비롯한 미국 명문대가 한국 입시 문화에 대해 비판하는 SAT 수업, 대회 준비, 학원의 연구 논문 작성 등 일반적인 주변 학생들의 모습에서 벗어나, 자신을 차별화시키는 노력에 온 힘을 쏟아야 한다. 거듭 강조하지만, 복사본은 아무리 훌륭해도 복사본에 불과하고, 입학사정관들이 지원자를 거절할 강력한 이유가 될 뿐이다. 여름방학을 통해 비전을 찾는 것은 입시 결과에 영향을 줄 뿐 아니라 삶에서 열정의 시작을 발견하는 첫 단계가 될 기회의 시점이라는 것을 기억해야 한다.
프로젝트 진행 스텝 (전공별 예시)
1단계: 관심분야 및 사회적 필요성 탐색
프로젝트는 학생이 선택한 전공과 직접적으로 일치할 수도 있지만, 전공의 더 큰 생태계 내에서 연결 및 구성요소로 접근할 수도 있다.
예1. 비즈니스: 경영학 서적이나 저널을 분석한 후 사회적 이슈가 있는 프로젝트 주제를 선택할 수 있다.
예2. 아티스트: 여름방학 기간을 통해 작품을 편집하거나 포트폴리오 준비를 할 수도 있지만, 이미지 인식(image recognition) 등 아트 관련 컴퓨팅 기술을 배울 수 있다.
예3. 고고학: 인류의 획기적 이정표가 될 순간들을 타임라인으로 구축해 볼 수 있다.
2단계: 전공 관련 구체적 목표 세우기
전공으로 이어갈 매우 구체적인 주제를 선택함으로써, 이번 여름 미션을 완수할 임팩트 있는 목표를 세운다. (학년에 따라 몇 년에 걸친 장기 플랜을 세움으로써 경험스토리를 기반해 구축할 수도 있다.)
예1. 비즈니스: 아티스트들 간의 성별, 임금 격차에 초점을 맞춘 프로젝트를 준비할 수 있다.
예2. 아티스트: 도시의 탄소 중립 개발을 위한 온라인 캠페인을 진행하고, 이미지 인식 기법을 활용하여 효과적인 기후 포스터 제작을 위한 비교 분석을 할 수 있다.
예3. 고고학: 빙하기 이후의 기후 변화가 서양의 밀 문화 및 동양의 쌀 문화에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지 프로젝트 주제로 삼을 수 있다.
3단계: 프로젝트 발표 시점 및 방법 결정
결과물은 리서치페이퍼, 프레젠테이션 또는 전시 작품 등 다양할 수 있다. 웹 사이트, 앱, 도서, 연구 논문 등 어떠한 형태로, 어느 시점에 세상에 발표할 것인지 결정하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 학교, 지역사회, 온라인, 자선 단체, 도서관, 기타 다양한 루트를 활용하여 영향력을 나타낼 대상 및 방법을 깊이 고려해야 한다.
프로젝트는 결국 주변을 변화시키고 영향력을 나타낼 때 가치가 생긴다. 얄팍한 팩트를 나열한 연구 논문은 영향력 및 의미가 절대적으로 부족하다. 임팩트 있는 가치를 생산한 프로젝트는 흔치 않은 독특한 규율이 필요하다는 것을 미국 입학사정관들은 익히 알고 있다. 창출하려는 불굴의 의지도, 억제할 수 없는 호기심도 자연스레 드러난다. 인턴십이나 대학 캠프도 입시에 도움이 되지만, 관심분야에서 시작한 자신만의 독창적인 프로젝트는 나를 차별화시키고 입학사정관이 초점을 맞추는 열정 및 관심을 분명하게 나타낼 수 있다.

Original Summer Project
In many parts of the world, this summer might just be relatively normal, for the first time in the past two years. Businesses are no longer subjected to pandemic limitations, and the job market has been picking up since the new year, which is already six months ago. High school students, in particular, are expected to do something worthwhile; admission officers eagerly anticipate how, after two summers of pandemic restrictions, students may have learned the value of being able to pursue their genuine passions. This expectation comes at the wake of the reality where, even during the height of the pandemic some students accomplished extraordinary feats, oftentimes using the summer as a launch pad. One student last year leveraged the increased receptivity of video conferencing solutions to create a global network of high school scholars that came together to research and report on social topics, in an effort to influence academics and even governments with the power of transparency. After considering how pandemic limitations meant his annual book drive to a multinational African educational charity would be shutdown, since physical books could pose a threat, another student built an ebook platform that solidified into his most successful book drive.
Just a week into July, many students have already found themselves worrying over summer plans that had fallen through at the last minute. Perhaps that great internship or prestigious college summer program did not work out. Alternatively, many more students find themselves simply clueless about how to differentiate this summer from last year’s pandemic restricted one. So they remain either passive or just get themselves buried in SAT classes, competition prep, or research paperwriting programs at hagwon, just like many of their friends. Yet, the well known fact is, the student that shows up in the application must be different from others because being a carbon copy of others, even if the copy is a great one, actually gives admission officers a strong reason to deny the applicant. However different one’s goals or interests may be, students who find themselves in need to pivot or quickly find a summer plan can take these first steps to not only impact their admissions outcome but possibly also discover a start to a lifelong passion.
Take these following steps to make it happen this summer and accomplish something considerably more significant than anything you had anticipated:
Step 1: Decide on a subject of study, a need in your society, or a personal passion.
If you want to major in business, pick up a business book or journal and identify an interesting topic as the subject of your original project. If you are an artist, you can being compiling your best work or learn a relatable tech skill, like image recognition. If you are an archeologist, you could begin building a timeline of humanity’s milestone moments. The project can align with the student’s chosen major directly but you can also approach it as a tangent or a component within the major’s larger ecosystem.
Step 2: Describe your area of interest in as much detail as you can.
By picking a very specific topic to specialize in, you can quickly become an expert in it and complete this summer mission (or build on it over a few years, depending on your grade). The more revealing or impactful, the better. The business student may focus on the gender pay disparity among top artists. The artist might run an online campaign for the city’s carbon neutral developments, and use image recognition to comparatively analyze the most effective climate posters. The archeologist could also choose to write how climate change after the last Ice Age created the West’s wheat culture versus the East’s rice culture.
Step 3: Determine how you’ll present this work.
Will your deliverable be a paper, a presentation, or an exhibition piece? How will you present your work to the world, be it a website, an app, a book, or a research paper? Who will you be targeting as your end-user or audience, which can be your school, a nearby charity, the library, or another institution?
The original project can only be considered completed iud something meaningful is produced. A research paper that just reports on facts lacks impact. Surely, admission officers will see in your work that your accomplishment required distinctive discipline. Innate, unquenchable curiosity as well as unflinching desire to create positive value are also blatantly noticeable. A great internship can also help, but doing an original project allows the student to write in a fully distinctive line as the author of his own college prep journey.
