[미국대학 입시] 아이비리그의 마음을 움직여라- 1부
아이비리그를 비롯한 미국 명문 대학 입학률은 계속해서 하락세를 나타내고 있다. 이에 대부분의 학생과 학부모들은 높은 GPA, SAT 점수만으로 입시에서 성공할 수 있다는 기존 접근에서 벗어나, 점수 그 이상의 것이 필요하다는 사실을 일반적으로 인식하게 되었다. 지원 과정 전반에 걸쳐 자신의 강점을 확인하고 그 가치를 얼마나 활용하였는지 에 따라 합격 또는 불합격이라는 상반된 결과로 나눠진다. 아이비리그 및 미국 명문 대학에서 수많은 학생들의 지원서 검토 시 면밀히 조사하고 그 안에서 찾길 원하는 핵심 자질에 대해 살펴보자.
첫째. 학업 에너지
우수한 내신 성적, AP, Honors, IB와 같은 고급 과정 이수 등 학업 성취는 분명 좋은 출발점에 해당하지만, 실제 입학 허가를 받은 학생들은 목표 대학이 중시하는 지적 능력과 학문적 관심을 탐구, 개발함으로써 자신만의 프로파일을 강화하였다는 사실을 기억하자. 입학 사정관들은 각 지원자의 학문적 발전에 대한 스토리를 평가한다. 즉 지적 동기가 바탕이 되어 도전적인 수업을 선택하고 열정적으로 참여하였음을 확인하고자 한다. 야심 찬 학생들의 올바른 수업 선택에서부터, 호기심과 규율을 통해 성숙하고, 자신만의 특별한 경험을 통해 강화되어가는 학업의 여정에 이르기까지 입학사정관들이 지원자의 학업 에너지를 충분히 평가할 수 있도록 확실한 증거를 제공해야 한다.
둘째. 호기심 불러일으키기
대부분의 학생들은 원서에서 자신의 학문적 관심분야, 즉 전공을 나타내려 노력하지만, 일반적으로 입시에 성공한 학생들의 경우 반대로 입학사정관의 호기심을 불러일으킨다. 이는 지원서의 핵심 주제가 될 자신만의 특이점을 구축해야 함을 의미한다. 수많은 수상 목록이나 흠잡을 데 없는 성적을 통해 탁월한 성취로 입학사정관을 감동시키려고 무분별한 노력을 하기보다는 개성을 구축함으로써 입학사정관의 호기심을 자극해야 한다. 또래와의 비슷한 경험과 환경 속에서도 자신만의 독특한 관점으로 분석하고, 결정하며, 성장해야 한다. 대학은 또래보다 더 많은 활동, 더 높은 점수, 더 빛나는 메달을 가진 학생을 입학시키려는 것이 아니다. 개인적인 비전을 세우고, 자발적으로 용기 있는 도전을 하는 학생을 찾는다.
셋째. 도전과 극복 (Inspiration)
사회와 환경에 대한 도전과 극복은 아이비리그 및 미국 명문대학 학생들의 중요한 자질 중 하나이다. 입학사정관들은 이러한 학생을 찾기 위한 노력의 일환으로, 자신의 삶에서 도전적이었던 상황과 극복한 경험을 묻는다. 또한 다른 사람들에게 영감을 주고 힘을 실어준 경우도 마찬가지의 높은 평가를 받는다. 결국 리더십과 위대함은 자신이 지닌 재능에 관한 것이 아니라 주어진 환경이나 상황에도 불구하고, 주변 사람들과 함께 이룰 수 있는 것을 파악하고 제시하는 자에 더 가깝다. 단순한 참여가 아닌 영감을 주고 주어진 환경 안에서 시도하고 부딪혀 상황을 변화시킬 수 있어야 한다.
물론 대부분의 유학생들은 삶에서 극적인 상황을 겪을 기회도 없었고 도전을 극복하는 행동이 주변 사람들에게 대단한 영감을 줄 수 있을 정도의 큰 고난이 아니었을지 모른다. 하지만 우리 이웃을 포함한 지역 사회의 공동체를 위한 도전과 자극이 여전히 존재하고, 작고 평범한 자가 거대한 바위를 움직이는 지도자가 되기도 한다. 아이비리그 및 미국 명문 대학은 차세대 사회 지도자 양성을 열망하고 지원자는 사회의 리더가 될 적절한 능력이 있음을 증명해야 한다. 활동의 포지션만으로 임팩트없이 대학이 당신의 리더십에 대한 확신을 갖을 것이라고 기대하는 것은 비현실적이다. 오리 알은 결코 백조를 부화시킬 수 없다.
이번 칼럼에서 논의된 세 가지 특성에는 모두 ‘움직임(Movement)’이라는 공통점이 있다.

7 Top Qualities the Ivy League Will Look for This Year – Part 1 of 3
As the acceptance rate into the Ivy League and top American colleges continue to fall, it is becoming common knowledge that students need more than excellent school grades and scores to get admitted into the most selective colleges. Identifying your strengths and knowing how to make the most of their worth throughout the application process will mean the difference between an acceptance letter and a rejection letter. So, let’s canvass the qualities that the Ivy League and top American colleges probe for during their college applications review process.
- Academic Energy
Striving for excellent academic performance such as a perfect transcript and advanced courses like AP, honors and IB is a strong start, but students who gain admission also strengthen their profiles by developing the intellectual qualities and academic interests valued by their target colleges.
This means admission officers evaluate the story behind your academic development. They look to confirm not only that you deliberately pushed yourself to do your best in challenging classes by looking for your intellectual motive. From choosing the right classes to take in, and outside of school for more ambitious students, to providing displayable evidence of your academic journey that started with curiosity, matured with discipline, and strengthened with personally unique experiences, supply admission officers with the proof they will need to fully appreciate your academic energy.
- Invoking Curiosity
Strong students try to display their academic curiosity in the admissions process but successfully admitted students go a step beyond this by invoking the curiosity of admissions officers. This means a student must build a unique pulse that can serve as the main theme in the application. Rather than indiscriminately striving to impress admissions officers with excellence in achievement, whether through an endless list of awards or flawless grades, make the admissions officers curious by building in personality. Given the same experience or environment as your peers, because of your unique perspectives and enthusiasm, how did you assess, decide, and grow differently? Admissions officers are not looking to admit students who have more activities, higher scores, or shinier medals than their peers. Instead, they are intrigued by the personal qualities that build personal visions, glue people together, and voluntarily brave challenges.
- Inspirational Constitution
Intelligence and commitment are staple qualities in students who would thrive in Ivy League and top American colleges. In an effort to find extraordinary students though, admissions officers specifically look for applicants who have overcome unusual challenges in their lives. Alternatively, those who inspire and empower others are also just as highly appreciated. After all, leadership and greatness is less about what one has or doesn’t have but more about learning what one and others can do despite, because, and beyond their given circumstance or environment. Look to inspire rather than just participate, and contribute whereas others may take.
Most international students, thankfully of course, did not have to battle through life-shattering atrocities nor suffer so greatly that the sheer act of overcoming a challenge can inspire others. However, enormous enormities bluntly and blatantly exist in many parts of the world for many people, including neighbors in our own communities. Alternatively, small and average people rise to become leaders who move giant boulders. Ivy League and top American colleges aspire to build the next generation of society’s leaders so prove that you have the right trappings to grow into a giant. Expecting admissions authorities to take your assurance of future leadership at its value without any supporting evidence is unrealistic. The duck inside the egg can’t hatch into a swan after all.
Together, the three qualities discussed in this article have one property in common. Movement.
Whether they regard current events or history, their renowned alumni or today’s leaders of business, society or academia, admissions officers are compelled to intentionally look for students who test their inner limits and walk beyond their comfort zones not only for their own intellectual benefit but also society’s. To show that you can fly in the future, begin by showing that you have been exercising your wings. Throughout, make your persona interesting, not boring.
