지난해 하버드에 지원한 57,000여명의 학생들 중 단지 2,000여명만이 합격 통지서를 받았다. 이는 3.4%의 합격률에 해당한다. 하버드에 지원한 대다수의 학생들은 학업 및 활동에 해당하는 핵심 역량이 우수함에도 불구하고 대다수가 불합격되었음을 기억해야 한다. 더욱이 가혹한 현실은 미국 Top 40위권 대학들 역시 글로벌화된 입시에서 입학률이 지속적으로 하락세가 증가된다는 것이다. 다음은 학생들이 세워야 할 입학 전략에 해당한다.
- 학교와 지역 사회에 영향을 미쳐야
재능 있는 수많은 학생들 사이에서 눈에 띄기 위해, 먼저 학교와 커뮤니티에서의 기회를 잡아야 한다. 아이비리그를 비롯한 미국 명문 대학은 지역적 활동을 통해 사회에 영향을 미친 학생들을 원한다. 학생 커뮤니티의 다양성 확대를 위한 주도적 활동, 주변 특정 지역을 향상시키기 위한 프로젝트, 지역 정치 참여 등을 예로 들 수 있다. 전공이나 관심 분야를 학교 및 지역 사회 참여에 융합할 수 있다면 더욱 좋다. 자신의 주변환경에 관심을 갖는다는 것은 대학 커뮤니티에서도 활발하게 활동할 것임을 보여주는 중요한 지표이다. 이는 입학사정관이 매우 높이 평가하는 것 중 하나로, 아이비리그 교육 요건은 이웃과 세상을 개선시키려는 것에 있다.

- 측정 가능한 다차원적 적합성
대학은 본질적으로 고등학생의 학업, 전문성 및 인성 개발을 확장해가는 과정이다. 대학 졸업 후에는 경력으로나 사회적으로나 성공과 실패, 승진과 강등 사이의 차이가 개인의 일생을 크게 좌우한다. 대학은 졸업생의 결과에 대해 깊은 관심을 갖는데 졸업생의 진로는 대학 순위에 직접적인 영향을 미쳐 대학 브랜드 평판에 중요한 요소이기 때문이다.
자신이 대학에 “적합한” 학생이라는 것을 표현할 때 진정성 있는 동기에서 비롯된 구체적 기회의 예를 함께 사용해야 한다. 또한 입학사정관을 납득시키기 위해서는 지원자의 주장이 고등학교 기록 안에서 나타나는 모습을 통해 입증 가능해야 한다. 대학으로 연결되는 목표 및 가치를 포함하는 것 또한 중요하며, 이는 고등학교 입학부터 거슬러 올라가는 경험과 이어지는 스토리에 해당한다. 역사는 사실이지만 느슨한 주장은 결론에 이르지 못한다는 것이다.
치열한 경쟁이 펼쳐지는 미국 대학 입시 환경에서 학생 및 학부모가 자신의 성취와 이력서에만 집중한다면 그 과정에서 길을 잃기 쉽다. 집요하게 모으거나 쌓아 올리기만 하는 것은 입학사정관이 원하는 바가 아니다. 그들은 커뮤니티에서 한 사람이 수행하는 결정, 행동 및 역할에 크게 의존하는 세상에서 잘할 수 있는 지원자를 찾기 위해 입학원서를 몇차례에 걸쳐 검토한다. 주변사람을 포함시켜 지역 활동에 참여할 기회를 주고 변화를 함께 추진해나가는 리더십이야 말로 대학입시에 중요한 키포인트가 된다. 대학은 실패를 통해서도 성공하는 사람들의 결정적 지표가 되는 자질을 찾는다. 아무런 목적도 의도도 없이, 단지 높이 솟아 있는 기념비를 찾는 것이 아님을 기억하자.

Over 57,000 students sought to be part of Harvard’s next freshmen class last year, and only about 2,000 of them were accepted. That equates to a 3.4% acceptance rate. It’s crucial to remember that the majority of students who applied to Harvard were well qualified in core personal qualifiers, such as academics and extracurricular activities, but the vast majority were still denied. Moreover, the harsh reality is that admissions rates have been declining across all of the Top 40 American colleges as they became more connected globally. Herein lies the next set of admissions strategy:
1. Connect and Boost to Impact your school and community
To stand out from a huge field of talented students, look to your school and community to find your advantage. Ivy League and top colleges love to admit students who have made an impact on their environment through civic involvement. This can entail having the initiative that adds to the diversity of your school’s student community, spearheading a project to enhance a specific area of your neighborhood or participating in local politics. It’s even better if you can integrate your major or field of interest into your school and community engagement.
Being interested in your environment shows admissions officers that you will also be active in your college community, which is something they value very highly. A student who meets the criteria for an Ivy League education aspires to improve their neighborhood and the world at large.
2. Excellent Communication: outstanding writer and persuasive speaker
Your personal essay is one of the most crucial parts of your application to an Ivy League university. The success of your essay will be determined by two factors: the experience you share in your essay and your ability to clearly explain how you’ve developed through the experience. However, many students erroneously presume that admission officers are looking for essays about remarkable events, such as saving an endangered animal from a raging tornado. What matters more to an Ivy League admissions officer is that your essay persuades them of what you’ve learnt from your experiences and how they’ve developed you as a person.
Just as admission officers want to see how persuasive your story is in your college application essay, they also want to see how influential you were in your daily life. They look for this by seeking for insight into how you’ve influenced, motivated, and strengthened those around you. Such leadership qualities will serve as a significant driver of success in your college career and beyond, so admission officers actively look for how an applicant stood out from the rest. Specifically, how did you find magic or purpose and the power to inspire people while others saw something as mundane.
3. Measurable Multidimensional Fit
College is essentially the next phase of a high school student’s academic, professional, and character development. Then, at the end of college is a lifetime where whether in career or socially, the difference between success and failure, advancement or demotion, would depend heavily on how resourceful one is. Colleges care deeply about the outcomes of their graduates, because the tally of their alumni directly weighs onto their brand reputation, thus ranking, which can enable or impede the university’s future.
When students try to express how they “fit” a college, they must do so using concrete examples of opportunities that they can claim with genuine appreciation. To convince admission officers of this sincerity, the opportunities claimed must be testable, and provable, using the student’s high school records. Moreover, connecting to a college’s critical values is also crucial and this also has to be part of a narrative that can be linked to experiences that can be traced to high school. After all, history is real but a loose claim is inconclusive.
In the ferociously competitive environment of US college admissions, it is easy to get lost in a rat race where a student or parent looks at just one’s own achievements and resume. Hoarding and climbing relentlessly, however, is not something admissions officers are looking for because they review student applications with the hope of finding those who would do well in the world, which depends heavily on the decisions, actions, and roles one plays in the community. Since successful people attract other people and are masterful in utilizing resources, these traits also are important benchmarks. Precisely and concisely, Ivy League admission officers look for the sort of qualities that are definitive markers of successful people, not islands with towering monuments that lead to nowhere and to no other purpose than just being taller than other towers.
